Apple's A20 Pro Is Its First 2nm Chip, Here's What Actually Changed

Apple unveiled the A20 Pro on 9 September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, and it's a bigger architectural jump than a typical yearly refresh. It's Apple's first chip built on TSMC's 2-nanometer process, and reportedly the first commercial smartphone chip to use gate-all-around (GAA) nanosheet transistors in place of the FinFET architecture that's powered every iPhone chip for over a decade. The standard iPhone 18 gets the non-Pro A20, while the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and the new foldable iPhone all ship with the A20 Pro.
What's new inside the A20 Pro
The A20 Pro carries a 6-core CPU, with two new "super cores" Apple says are up to 20% faster and describes as desktop-class, the fastest cores Apple has put in a smartphone, alongside four new efficiency cores. The GPU moves to a 7-core design delivering up to 40% faster graphics and roughly 50% more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro in last year's iPhone 17 Pro. Apple also built new neural accelerators directly into the GPU, doubling FP8 performance for running large language models on-device, on top of two 16-core Neural Engines.
How much faster it actually is
Apple's own figures put the A20 Pro at 40% more sustained performance than the A19 Pro, and roughly double the sustained performance of the A18 Pro in the iPhone 16 Pro, a comparison that matters more than peak benchmark numbers since sustained performance is what holds up during longer sessions of gaming or video editing before thermal throttling kicks in. Early Geekbench 6 results circulating this week put the chip at around 25% faster than the A19 Pro in raw benchmark terms, consistent with Apple's own claims.
What this means for an iPhone 18 upgrade
The 2nm jump is the first time Apple has changed transistor architecture since FinFET arrived nearly a decade ago, and it's landing specifically on the Pro models, not the standard iPhone 18, which is worth knowing before deciding which tier to buy into. For anyone weighing an upgrade, the practical differences are strongest in sustained workloads, gaming sessions, on-device AI tasks and camera processing, less so in everyday scrolling and messaging, where recent A-series chips have already been comfortably fast. iPhones with A20 silicon go on sale Friday, 18 September 2026.
Florence Trading carries the iPhone 18 lineup in the UAE with local warranty support, alongside the rest of Apple's range. If the A20 Pro's jump to 2nm has you weighing an upgrade, it's worth comparing the Pro and standard iPhone 18 tiers before the launch date lands.
